Job Description:

The Autopsy Assistant will provide on-call autopsy assistant services to support the

Laboratory and Pathology Medicine Service at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center

located in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Assistant will be responsible for responding when paged

and arranging a mutually convenient time to conduct autopsies with the Pathologist.

Availability of 24/7 on-call services is required.

Key Responsibilities:

• Respond promptly when paged and coordinate autopsy times with the Pathologist.
• Set up the morgue and prepare necessary instruments, equipment, supplies and

documentation prior to each autopsy.

• Assist the Pathologist during autopsies by labeling specimens, recording observations,

taking samples and photographs as directed.

• Perform tasks such as evisceration, organ weighing and fluid collection under the

Pathologist's supervision.

• Clean and package remains, and clean all equipment and work areas after each case.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation including case details, weights and

autopsy findings.

• Transport remains to the designated location upon autopsy completion.
• Ensure adherence to safety, sanitation, privacy and professional standards at all times.
• Provide 24/7 on-call coverage and be available to perform autopsies as needed.

Skills and Knowledge:

• High school diploma or equivalent required, associate degree or certification preferred
• 1 years of experience as an autopsy/morgue assistant in a medical examiner or hospital setting
• Ability to work with human remains in a respectful manner
• Strong organizational and documentation skills
• Flexibility to accommodate on-call schedule including nights and weekends
